I don't know why I'm amazed...but somehow I always am...

This weekend the kids and I stayed at J's apartment.  We went to two ball games - the Yankees on Saturday and the Brooklyn Cyclones in Coney Island, Brooklyn on Sunday. 

The girlfriend of a good friend of X's lives in J's building - so I bump into him nearly every time I'm there.  Which is cool.  We're friends & he's a really nice guy.  So, Saturday evening we're going out for icecream & we bump into him in the lobby.   He tells the kids:   "I'm seeing your dad in a little bit!  At a restaurant right down the street!"

So, J & I kind of joke that we should stop by... and Max is like "Yeah!  I want to see dad!"  So  tell him after we get the icecream, let's call. 

We come back, sit outside on J's stoop & enjoy the icecream & he calls.  Then hands me the phone.  X is like "Errr, so you're right there... I guess I should see the lads... it's alittle inconvenient..."  I say I'll just swing by the restaurant with them - it's a block away.  He pretty much says no & I hang up.

He calls back.  "It's just that I'm in friends mode now, you understand?  Not kids mode."

I don't answer & just hang up.  If I've learned anything in these past few post-divorce years is it makes no sense to argue.

But I still just can't believe the things he says.  I mean, if he had said "sure, bring them by - but just for aminute -- that I can see.  You have a night out, don't want the kids... but...

But somehow X has this magic ability to turn his parenting on and off!  Amazing!  And I keep telling myself I shouldn't be surprised... but you know... I am.  And Max?  Well he must have picked up some vibe when he talked to X - because he never asked &  just dropped the whole subject.

And minor league games?  They Rule!  The field was so small!  Max was able to get his ball signed & meet the ball players... Also there is even the possibilty to catch foul balls!!  So it keeps the kids more entertained too!  No more majors for me!!  Plus this is right in coney Island - we went on the Boardwalk, the beach, went to Nathan's for lunch.... cool, cool, cool!
